The Brief

California Olive Ranch is the leading domestic olive oil brand. Most consumers don’t think about olive oil beyond the shelf, and the category is saturated with Mediterranean lifestyle imagery that looks the same everywhere. The mandate: build real brand recognition. The answer was Cal, a miniature California rancher, composited at scale into real environments, delivering the brand’s origin story with deadpan character comedy.

The Role

Integrated Producer. Three spots, "Meet Cal" (:30), "Dry Salad" (:30), and "Pesto" (:15), produced for CTV with digital and social cutdowns.

The production challenge was scale compositing. Cal had to look genuinely small, not cartoon-small, not obviously green-screened, alongside full-size actors in a working ranch, a real kitchen, and a grocery store olive oil aisle. That meant tight coordination between what we set up in camera on the day and what AFX was going to finish in post with VFX Supervisor Mark Leis. In-camera decisions on the shoot directly affected the VFX pipeline. Getting those two conversations aligned and moving in the same direction was the job.

The Work

Three spots built around one character. Cal harvests olives the size of his head, climbs kitchen counters to advise home cooks, and holds court in the grocery aisle like he owns the place. The compositing holds up, which is the bar for this kind of work: if the audience is thinking about the VFX, the spot has already lost.

Clean, Californian, and visually unlike anything else in the olive oil category.
